Media Magelang – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh sent a formal letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, demanding mobilized support for Palestine.

Hamas leader Haniyeh called for global support to end Israel's aggression in Gaza and end of brutality in occupied territories.

Besides sending a letter to Indonesia, Haniyeh also sent a similar letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as cited in Iranian Presstv on 18 May 2021.

The request for support from the Muslim world came amid the divided Arab world given that numerous Middle East countries have normalized ties with Israel.

Has the Palestine issue lost its relevance?

Under the then-Donald Trump administration in 2020, several Arab nations such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain. Morocco and Sudan signed an Abraham Accord to recover diplomatic ties with Israel.

Such an act made Palestinians feel betrayed and alienated.

The effort to lure Arab nations to normalize ties with Israel once happened during the Jimmy Carter administration, but it failed, said former war planner at the Pentagon Rip Kirby.
